Through residencies, teaching, and a DIY concert series they perform new music with the goal of reinvigorating the spirituality of the concert ritual. The AMC is composed of various individuals as well as subset ensembles including the Antigone String Quartet, the Antigone Piano Trio, and Ismene, the violin/cello duo of founders Amelia Korbitz and Liam Battle.
Cleveland Classical noted the Antigone String Quartet’s “technical mastery, rich tone” for their performance of Charles Ives’ Second String Quartet with the Cleveland Institute of Music’s New Music Ensemble. As the ensemble’s string quartet for the 2024-25 season they collaborated closely with Marilyn Shrude, Margaret Brouwer, and Claude Baker on performances of their works for string quartet. The quartet recently performed Brian Nabor’s string quartet as a part of the Resonate Project’s performances at the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music’s New Music Festival in Bowling Green, Ohio. Their work has been heard on 90.9 WGUC Cincinnati.
The Antigone Piano Trio’s has held guest artist and teaching positions at the Við Djúpið music festival. As teachers, the trio lead festival students through small ensemble and chamber works by living composers, giving students some of their first exposure to open score music. Regarding their 2024 recital at the festival, Forbes noted that “The audience was enraptured in a deep meditation from start to finish.” The Antigone Trio has performed works by Tyson Gholston Davis, Gregory Rowland Evans, Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson, Ursula Mamlok, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Kaija Saariaho. The trio’s Við Djúpið performances have been recorded for Iceland National Radio.
Ismene is the core duo of the Antigone Music Collective made up of Amelia Korbitz (violin) and Liam Battle (cello). The duo’s palate is broad and deep. Ismene is constantly commissioning and premiering new works for violin and cello. Recent commissions include Brian Raphael Nabor’s WONDER with The Well in Cincinnati, Emma Tucker’s Shape Memory, and Gregory Rowland Evan’s Nyctivoe II.
Individual members of the ensemble hold regular principal positions in major music festival orchestras, full-time chamber ensembles, and chamber music festivals.
